What's in a Graphic?

I find myself responding to a variety of communication types. Although visual seems to be of the most popular forms, written and audio gain my attention more often. Written communication to me is the most "direct." The words are right in front of you, in most forms there is little to no hidden meaning so you can relay the same message to multiple people. Written communication also leaves the reader with the freedom to create their own visuals. Audio communication is extremely appealing to me. Listening to music, hearing a poet cite poetry, or sirens and alarms warning us of danger are all valuable communication outlets. Music and poetry are pure. Often, they express the author's true feeling about a situation. Without sirens and alarms to warn us about dangers such as fires and hurricanes it would be more difficult to communicate an emergency situation to a mass of people. A fire alarm for example communicates one universal message, we are taught at a young age what that message is and without it many more lives would be lost.
For visual communications, color is a necessary tool. Colors relay different messages and promote specific feelings. The color red for example is looked at being a passionate color often symbolizing anger or love. Purple was often the color of royal dignitaries which symbolize power.
In order for a brand to be successful they need to exhibit a strong presence visually, logos are used to give a clue as to what the company it about while keeping it simple and visually appealing. The television network NBC uses a peacock as their logo. There are six feathers on the bird all in different colors which represent the different departments news, sports, entertainment, stations, networks, and productions. The bird is also looking to the right which is symbolizes the company "looking into the future." While I think this is a visually pleasing graphic due to the simplicity, the colors, and use of white space I do not believe that many people would understand the meaning behind it unless it was explained.
Beats headphones is an example of a successful logo. The “b” on the circle represents a head wearing the headphones. Without knowledge of the brand a consumer would be able to figure out what the product is. Although there is only a single color used, a variety of shapes makes the graphic more appealing.
The company Amazon has had strong visual presence exhibiting a successful brand logo. An arrow going from “a” to the “z” is meant to represent that Amazon has “everything from a to z.” The arrow is also in the shaped like a smiley face which represents customer satisfaction. Type is what really makes this logo a success.
Visuals are vital in successfully communicating messages in a society. Although there are a variety of different components a company can include in their logo, picking the right combination and using them in a creative way is what will make them successful.
